Yes, I've added the locations on both, taking precedence on variant and using template locations if none are defined on product. It's implemented on review299351002

When using multiple variants it makes sense to define the locations per template as this simplifies the configuration for multiple variants. 

Also this makes the module more simple to use when using a single variant as there is no need to open the variants from to define it's default location.
