I understand that it is verifying the BIC against the IBAN.

This I found in the net...

(notice there is a developer section to use the API
but I don't believe it is without cost)

This is what we use to convert spanish number formats to iban on account_statement_aeb43:

Help on function to_bic in = to_bic(number)
Return the BIC for the bank that this number refers to.

We should also consider having a consistency check between different number type for the same account. As issue8611 showed national format may be used and should be coherent with IBAN.

Here is the structure:
Indeed it is not the BIC but the bank code.
So probably the check should require to define the bank code on the bank in addition to the BIC:

Could you post an example on how to extract the BIC from the IBAN number in belgium? Is thi BIC part of the IBAN?

In spain the BIC is not part of the IBAN but there is a national bank code which is part of the IBAN. The BIC can be deducted from the Bank code.

In some countries (at least in Belgium), it is possible to extract the BIC from the IBAN number. So we could have a check that ensure such number is linked to the bank.

Normally, the same could be done for French bank but python-stdnum does not have yet the methods.
